Air travel for animals
Air travel for animals
Only cats and dogs are allowed to travel on passenger planes. A passenger is required to notify an airline of the animal transport at the moment of purchasing a ticket at the latest. The number of animals transported on the same flight is limited, therefore the airline gives consent on an individual basis. Small animals (up to 80 kg weigh, including a cage) can travel as carry-on baggage, while bigger ones travel in a baggage compartment.
The size of a cage carried on board is: 55x40x20cm. The cage should be big enough to allow the animal to stand up, turn around and lie down freely.
Travelling animals must have a valid rabies vaccination certificate, a microchip (or a legible tattoo) and a veterinarian certificate as required by a destination country. In the European Union and Andorra, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland and the Vatican a special passport is required for animals.
Unfortunately, there are no airlines currently proving direct flights from Poland to Great Britain and Ireland, which accept animals on board. The only option is cargo.
The fees vary greatly among the carriers and they depend on the airline, route and weight of an animal (including the cage). The most standard fee is equal to the excess baggage fee – around 20-30 PLN per kilo.
