Cancelled and delayed flights
Cancelled flights
In case of a flight cancellation a passenger will be refunded the cost of an airline ticket or will be offered an alternative connection to a destination airport. The passenger is also entitled to the compensation due to inability to continue the journey. The passenger is not entitled to the compensation if they are notified of the flight cancellation:
- At least 14 days prior to departure or
- Up to 7 days prior to departure and the airline offers an alternative flight, which begins no earlier than 2 hours before the scheduled flight and which finishes no later than 2 hours than the scheduled flight or
- Less than 7 days prior to departure and the airline offers an alternative flight which begins no earlier than 1 hour before the scheduled flight and which finishes no later than 2 hours than the scheduled flight
Delayed flights
A flight is considered delayed when:
- It is at least 2 hours delayed - applies to the flights up to 1500km
- It is at least 3 hours delayed - applies to the flights over 1500km inside the EU and to the flights between 1500 and 3500km elsewhere
- It is at least 4 hours delayed – applies to all other flights
In case of a flight delay the airline is obliged to provide all passengers with a free meal (adequate to the delay time), two phone calls and two fax or e-mail messages. If the flight is rescheduled for the following day, the carrier is obliged to provide accommodation in a hotel and airport-hotel transfer.
If a flight is delayed at least 5 hours a passenger is entitled to a full refund of the ticket cost (for an unused trip or for the whole ticket if the flight does not serve the original travel plans and for a return flight to a departure place).
Refused boarding (overbooking)
In case of a refused boarding, despite the purchase of a valid ticket, a passenger is entitled to the compensation. The above mentioned situation takes place when an airline sells more tickets than the number of seats available on a plane (overbooking). The airline pays to the passenger the following compensation:
- 250EUR in case of flights up to 1500km
- 400EUR in case of flights up to 3500km
- 600EUR in case of flights over 3500km
Know your rights. The Civil Aviation Office has prepared a leaflet, which informs the passengers of their rights.
