The Schengen Area
The Schengen Area comprises the countries which signed the Schengen Agreement on the free border crossing. Till date 25 countries have signed this agreement: Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
The following areas are not included in the Schengen Area: Greenland and Faroe Islands (Denmark), Athos (Greece), Büsingen am Hochrhein (Germany), Spitzbergen and Bear Island (Norway), Livigno (Italy).
The citizens of the Schengen Area countries can travel freely within the Schengen Area. The border control has been eliminated, however it is advised to possess a valid identification document confirming the citizenship of the Schengen Area country. The citizens of the Schengen Area countries can also travel freely to Monaco, the Vatican and San Marino.
